Veterans Making a Difference
When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant….When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him [the Centurion], and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well. (Luke7:3, 9)
Jesus reached out and met the needs of the Centurion and marveled at his faith. The members of St John’s church are very supportive of out military veterans and wish to meet the needs of our veterans. Not only do we list active duty personnel in our Sunday morning prayers but we have very powerful outreach programs specifically for those who are returning home after serving our nation.
St John’s Church supports our local veteran’s organizations through annual Memorial and Veteran’s Day commemorations. We host and provide a free Veteran’s Day dinner for the veteran and their families. We also work with Veterans Making a Difference by traveling to their facility and offering our assistance. We do this by providing warm clothing and shoes for the homeless veterans of the greater Reading, PA area. Several times a year we provide and prepare breakfast and lunches for the homeless veterans. We also do various fundraisers in support of “Veterans Making a Difference”.
We prepare “Bag Lunches” for homeless veterans and drive through the city of Reading delivering them wherever we find a homeless vet.. These bag lunches also contain gum, candy, crackers, personal hygiene items. We will not forget those who served this nation.
